SOCCER NEWS & Thursday Soccer Betting Tips

NY Red Bulls 4-2 Chelsea
Asmir Begovic endured a difficult debut as Chelsea suffered a 4-2 loss to New York Red Bulls in the International Champions Cup.

Loic Remy opened the scoring with an emphatic strike in the first half and had the chance to double the lead, but failed to divert a cross into an open goal.

The Red Bulls were level shortly after the break when second half substitute Begovic was tackled by Franklin Castellanos, who finished into an empty net after a poor pass from John Terry.

Begovic was beaten again midway through the second half by a header from 16-year-old Tyler Adams, before Sean Davis slotted home from close range.

Eden Hazard pulled a goal back for Chelsea but Davis scored again as a disorganised Chelsea back line fell apart after the interval.

USA 1-2 Jamaica: Americans out
A contentious free kick from Giles Barnes inspired Jamaica to a shocking 2-1 victory over the United States, dumping the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup co-host out in the semifinals.

USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan was judged to have handled the ball outside his own penalty area in the first half, and Barnes curled the set-piece over the wall and into the net to give Jamaica a two-goal advantage at the Georgia Dome.

Barnes goal combined with Darren Mattocks earlier header sent Jamaica to its maiden Gold Cup decider, while the defending champion U.S. missed out on a sixth straight continental championship final despite Michael Bradleys goal two minutes after halftime.

A horror five minutes for the U.S. saw it concede a deficit it could not arrest, with Mattocks and Barnes scoring in the final quarter-hour before the interval.

Lax defending from the home side allowed Mattocks to head a long throw in off both posts in the 31st minute before Barnes slotted his controversial free kick in the 36th.

Jamaica goalkeeper Ryan Thompsons slippery fingers helped the U.S. back into the contest in the 48th minute as he failed to hold Aron Johannsons shot from the edge of the box.

Clint Dempseys follow-up effort ensured Thompson could not gather possession at the second attempt and Bradley poked the loose ball into the net.

But after a positive start to the second half, the U.S. was unable to fashion an equalizer as Jamaica pulled off the biggest upset of the 2015 Gold Cup.

With Jamaica coach Winfried Schafer and his fellow German Jurgen Klinsmann setting their sides up in relatively defensive 4-4-2 formations, the game started slowly in Atlanta.

Je-Vaughn Watson had the first genuine chance of the match in the 11th minute, dragging his shot wide from just outside the area.

The home team started to get on top from the 20th minute onwards, although their final pass was lacking, before Mattocks put Jamaica in front, inexplicably winning a header in between two defenders and looping the ball onto the far post.

The ball bounced back along the goal line and then deflected into the net off the other post.

Guzans error and Barnes strike followed soon after and the home fans were reeling at the break.

The momentum swung drastically in the second half when Bradley scored and Klinsmanns men should have been level three minutes later when Johannsson headed over from six yards after Thompson again failed to hold an initial shot.

Jamaicas custodian again needed some luck in the 56th minute when Bradleys swerving drive from 30 yards bounced off his chest and onto the post, but Thompson had the last laugh as the Caribbean nation held on for the win.

OFFICIAL: Liverpool sign Benteke
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of
Christian Benteke from
Aston Villa, with the Belgian becoming the clubs second most expensive player ever at ВЈ32.5 million.

The Reds triggered Bentekes big-money buy-out clause over the weekend and have now announced the deal after the player underwent medical tests with the club.

The 25-year-old is the latest player to move to Anfield in a busy summer, following Roberto Firmino, Danny Ings, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez.

Much of that outlay, including the ВЈ29m spent on Brazilian Firmino, has been offset by the ВЈ49m departure of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City.

Benteke moved to the Premier League from Genk in 2012 and hit the ground running, scoring 19 goals in the top flight.

He handed in a transfer request at the end of the campaign, however, only to withdraw it and sign a new contract.

The 2013-14 season represented a tougher challenge for the striker, and after scoring 10 league goals he ruptured his Achilles and missed last summers World Cup.

The Belgian struggled for large parts of last season as Villa laboured under Paul Lambert, but hit form under new boss Tim Sherwood and scored 11 of his 13 top-flight strikes in the latter weeks of the campaign.

The news is a blow for Villa, coming just days after Fabian Delph went back on his decision to stay with the club.

Having appeared set to move to Manchester City, Delph announced earlier in July that he would be staying at Villa Park.

But on Friday he was spotted in Manchester and it was quickly announced that he had indeed secured an 8 million move to the Etihad Stadium.
