Ajax kick off their bid to reclaim the Eredivisie title with a tricky
away game at AZ Alkmaar on Sunday. Our betting tips suggest we could
see quite a few goals in this one.
The Amsterdam club have already suffered a crushing blow to their season by losing in midweek at home to Rapid Vienna to exit the Champions League in the qualifying rounds. To the surprise of many Frank de Boer is still in charge of the club that he led to 4 successive titles prior to last season’s 2nd place.
There has been a few summer comings and goings with promising forward Ricardo Kishna joining Lazio while Icelandic striker Kolbein Sigborsson left for Nantes. Coming in Mitchel Dijks has joined from Willem II and Arkadiusz Milik has made his loan move permanent after the Pole netted 11 times in 14 starts for Ajax last season. The arrival of Yaya Sanogo on loan from Arsenal should also aid their goal threat but their biggest money signing was the €6million capture of Nemanja Gudelj from AZ. The Serbian midfielder is almost certain to make his league debut for Ajax against his former club on Sunday.
Both Milik and Gudelj were on target in the 3-2 defeat to Rapid Vienna on Tuesday so the early signs look good going forward for this newlook Ajax side but the defensive problems that plagued them at times last season still appear to be present.
AZ had a good season last time out finishing just one place below Ajax in 3rd place. They were also involved in Europe in midweek and have had a long trip back to Istanbul to contend with as they prepare for this game.
If pre-season is anything to go by then they could be a major threat to the likes of Ajax and last year’s winners PSV this season. They have won all their friendly matches and won their final 4 Eredivisie fixtures last season so John van den Brom and his side will have every reason to approach this game with confidence.
There have been some major departures this summer though. As well as Gudelj, Steven Berghuis has joined Premier League Watford and USA international Aron Johannsson has moved to Werder Bremen. Van den Brom has signed two players this week though with left-back Rajko Brezancic and Iranian forward Alireza Jahanbakhsh joining from NEC Nijmegen. The 21 year old scored 12 Eredivisie goals last season and could be thrown straight into the starting line-up this weekend.
There will be an element of uncertainty in both camps ahead of the opening day. Ajax won here 3-1 last August but lost the return fixture in Amsterdam. Both sides like to attack and can be a little shaky at the back against the better sides so goals are likely to be the order of the day here. Backing there to be 3 or more goals at 1.90 in Sportpesa looks to be worth a bet here.
